Code of Conduct

The Beyond Compliance Network is dedicated to providing a safe, friendly, generative, and welcoming environment for anyone who participates in our convenings. Anyone who takes part in community events, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, culture, or religion or beliefs, deserves an inclusive and harassment-free environment. We believe that a diversity of views, expertise, opinions, backgrounds, and experiences of all attendees will make our community stronger and more generative.

To this end, we expect participants to respect others and their ideas. Please refer to our Community Guidelines (below) for further guidance on positive interactions.

The following behaviors will not be tolerated:

  • Hate speech, harassment, discrimination, abusive behavior, insults, intimidation, or threats in any form or medium
  • Sexually explicit language or material
  • Violations of privacy
  • Disregard for rules and instructions of session facilitators or moderators

For more information about what constitutes harassment, please refer to the Gathering for Open Source Hardware’s examples of behavior. Anyone requested to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. Procedures and options for reporting violations will be prominently available throughout the event.

We reserve the right to take any action deemed necessary and appropriate in response to any incident of unacceptable behavior. This may include immediate removal from the event or event site without warning. We reserve the right to prohibit attendance at any future event, either online or in person, that is run or co-led by the network.

Community Guidelines

Here are some tips for positive and generative interactions. Ultimately we are all stewards of this time and space together. Please respect the valuable time that you and your colleagues have dedicated to these interactions and show up ready to engage and participate.

  • Ask for consent in sharing content with broader audiences. Please don’t post pictures, directly quote or attribute quotes to people on social media (unless you receive express permission to do so).
  • Aim for one statement or comment at a time. Consider speaking 1/n of the time (i.e., if there are 5 people in the room, please aim to speak 1/5 of the time).
  • Be open to learning. We are all experts in our own right; we all have something to learn. Please be respectful of the varied knowledge everyone is bringing to the space.
  • Use yes/and or both/and to build a collective conversation. We acknowledge that disagreement can also be a fruitful place for engagement: if you feel compelled to correct a misrepresentation or mischaracterization, please do so with kindness.
  • Consider best intent; attend to impact. If you are bothered by someone’s comments, we encourage you to make this known, and to consider approaching the situation with curiosity. If someone else notes that your comments have bothered them, we ask that you prioritize addressing the impact rather than solely focusing on your original intent.

For more information on incident reporting, see our full Code of Conduct here.
